Guild is built by Team BlockX — five students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) — for the OPay Scholars 2026 National Innovation Challenge (categories: SME & Informal Sector as lead, Fintech & Digital Payments, and AI & Automation). We did not meet in a boardroom. We met in lecture halls, practical groups, and library corners — five people who kept ending up in the same rooms, chasing the same thing. What held us together was not only skill. It was where we came from. The man Guild opens with — Musa, a bricklayer the banks cannot see — is not a persona to us. He is family.

The builders

Temitope Akinsunmade

Coordinator · Project Lead — Computer EngineeringKeeps five people aligned, on scope, and on deadline. Owns delivery: the timeline, the task split, and the submission itself.

Where we come from

Talent is everywhere in Nigeria. The infrastructure that makes it visible is not. We know, because we grew up on the wrong side of that gap.

Treasure — the boy who carried block

At ten, he carried block on his head at the site, beside his father, to add to what the family made that week. He fell in love with computers before he owned one, and taught himself to code on a ₦512MB Itel phone bought with the prize from a school debate. The boy who carried the blocks grew up to build the system that finally sees the man who lays them.

Ogechukwu — built back from zero

Her father reached Lagos as a young man, had his savings stolen, and slept under a bridge — walking to the Seme border each dawn to carry loads for strangers, building a life back from nothing all the way to public office. She wrote her first lines of code on a Tecno Pop 3, rationing data by the megabyte.

Sunmade — the cooperative run by hand

His father ran a savings cooperative for unbanked traders out of a filling station in Akure — marking paper cards by hand, late into the night, carrying the losses himself when the arithmetic went wrong. Guild is that cooperative, rebuilt to reach millions instead of one street.

Naheem — one act of belief

His mother took out a loan to buy him his first laptop. Most people never get that one act of belief — never meet the person willing to vouch for them. Guild is built so they no longer have to wait for one.

Enoch — a screen too small to practise on

He borrowed his father’s phone to learn to code on a screen too small to practise on, and traded cybercafé errands for internet hours. He builds for the people blocked by lack of access — because he was one of them.
We have watched the people Guild is for our whole lives. This is not a class project. It is personal.
Guild is built with OPay — the rails money moves on — Google Gemini, the intelligence that reads a voice note and a notebook photo, and Canva, the design that tells the story.
