Real talk: most people can’t save by deciding to save. The money shows up, the money disappears — there’s always something that needed it five minutes ago. Savings on Guild is the version of ajo that doesn’t require an ajo woman walking down your street at 7 AM every morning. You tell us the rule once. We pull the amount the moment your wallet has the balance, before you have a chance to spend it. That’s it.

The three pieces

Rules

“Save ₦500 every Friday.” Or “Save 10% of every payment that lands.” Or “Save ₦1,000 daily from Monday to Friday.” A rule is a standing instruction we apply on a cadence.

Goals

Optional. “I want to save ₦100,000 by December for the apprenticeship fee.” A goal is a target with an ETA. We show you progress against it whenever you check.

Contributions

The individual debits. Each one is its own ledger row. You see them in your transaction history with their status — pending, settled, or failed.

How a rule works

You set it up once. After that, it runs in the background.
1

You tell Guild the rule

From WhatsApp: “save ₦500 every Friday.” The intent engine routes you to a setup flow. It confirms back: “Save ₦500 every Friday from your wallet to your savings? Reply YES.”From the web: guild.com.ng/savings. Tap New rule. Pick the amount, cadence (daily, weekly, monthly), source (wallet, payout-on-arrival, or manual), and a goal if you want.
2

The rule sits in the savings table

Cadence locked. Next-run timestamp set. Source defined.
3

When the cadence fires, the rule runs

For a wallet-source rule: we check your wallet balance. If you have ₦500 or more, we move ₦500 to savings and write two ledger rows (wallet debit, savings credit). For a payout-on-arrival rule: the moment a payment lands in your wallet, we pull the rule amount before the rest is available to spend. For a manual rule: we wait for you to confirm each contribution.
4

If the wallet is empty

The contribution writes as FAILED. We notify you by SMS or WhatsApp. The rule keeps running on the next cadence — we don’t try to drain a wallet that isn’t there.
5

When you hit your goal

If the rule has a goal attached and the contributions add up to the target, the goal flips to ACHIEVED. WhatsApp pings you: “You hit your ₦50,000 apprenticeship goal. Withdraw to your bank, or roll it into a new goal.”

A real example

Mama Bisi the trader at Oje Market wants to save ₦1,500 every working day for inventory replacement. She tells Guild:
Save ₦1,500 every weekday from my wallet. Goal: ₦150,000 for new stock by November.
A hundred contribution rows over twenty weeks of working days. By November she has the ₦150,000 sitting in savings, ready to withdraw to her bank or roll into a new goal. What she doesn’t have is the willpower problem. She didn’t have to remember to save. She didn’t have to walk past temptation every Friday afternoon with cash in her pocket. The savings was already pulled before she opened the app.

Sources you can save from

The default. Pulls from your Guild wallet balance whenever the rule fires. If the wallet is empty, the contribution fails silently and we try again on the next cadence.

Goals (optional but worth it)

Saving without a goal is fine. Saving toward a specific thing is better. A goal does three things:
  1. Gives you a target. The amount you’re saving toward.
  2. Gives you an ETA. The date you’re aiming for.
  3. Gives you a progress read. The dashboard shows the bar filling up.
Goals are not strict — you can blow past the date or fall short. They’re a focusing mechanism, not a contract. You can pause, archive, or rename a goal any time.
Stack rules toward the same goal if you want. Example: one weekly ₦500 rule + a payout-on-arrival rule of 10% of inflows, both targeting the same ₦100,000 apprenticeship goal. The contributions add up against the goal regardless of which rule fired them.

What happens to the saved money

It sits in your Guild savings balance. Not your wallet. Not your bank. A separate balance with the same append-only ledger discipline. When you want it out, you withdraw to your bank. Same path as a wallet withdrawal — OPay payout, beneficiary name pre-validated, sub-minute landing time. We don’t take a cut of your savings. We don’t pay you interest on it either (at v1). Treat it as a holding area that prevents impulse spending and gives you a fixed amount to draw from when you need it.

How savings interacts with your standing

Saving activity is a small positive signal in your standing score — the model rewards Job Seekers who manage cash flow consistently. But it’s a small signal compared to job completion and on-time attendance. Don’t save to game your tier. Save because the money you don’t see is the money you keep.
